teachings

i have taught courses in:

  • creative movement- aimed for elementary school children (specifically kindergarten and 4th/5th graders) at an after-school center. I worked on coordination, listening, introduction to a basic yet fun warm up, following-the-leader, games that apply principles and elements of choreography and creation.
  • dance history lectures- i lectured at Snug Harbor Cultural Center for a series sponsored by SiCoLab. during the lecture, we tracked the history and progression of American modern dance and its roots in balletic and non-western classical dance forms. i approach this course with an emphasis on discourse, challenging the normative views on dance as a movement art.
  • post-modern dance techniques- i approach PoMo from an inclusive, improvisational perspective. I incorporate a slow yet thorough warm up starting on the floor and working up to standing. We then engage in partner work and improvisation and apply these exercises into phrases that encourage individuality.
  • exploratory movement- in this course, we explore movement from all angles. borrowing largely from contact improvisation and loose martial arts forms, we ease ourselves into exploring our movement potential. this class finds structure in non-structure.
